Our mission at Trait d'Union is to support families living in Haiti whose precarious economic situation hinders the will, dream and natural potential of their children who then find their future in imminent danger. We prioritize the fundamental development of children in difficult economic situations by providing access to a quality education, health care, new technologies, as well as assisting parents with the necessary tools to generate revenue.
Trait d'Union focuses mainly on five aspects: education, the fight against hunger, prevention on a sanitary and environmental level, leadership, and the production of activities that generate revenue.
Areas of Operation
For the moment, our activities focus on two localities in the Ouest (West) department of Haiti:
Marin - Once reliant on agriculture, Marin is a locality where numerous modifications have led to the decapitalization of the natives of the region. There is no agriculture, no more sugar cane fields or any type of industry. Currently, the Plain of the Cul-de-Sac receives the biggest number of displaced people from the earthquake of January 12, 2010. That makes this community a priority on all levels and if we do not intervene on time, we can expect the worst.
Débrosse - A locality dependent on the 5th communal section of Arcahaie, Débrosse is almost impossible to reach, even by motorcycle. Drinking water, sanitary installations and electricity are non-existent. To survive, the inhabitants grow gros pois (black peas), pois congo (pigeon pea), coffee beans, watercress, bananas and yams. Débrosse, which is very mountainous, is not immune to severe weather or dry seasons that often take away any slim hope.
At Debrosse, we are entirely in charge of a modest school, as we believe that education is fundamental. Our school is the only one in the community. The next closest educational institution is a public school located in Michel. It is approximately a two hour walk away.
